How it works

  1. 01

Record the guitar (a DI or a phone recording) or use any audio file.

  2. 02

Drop it onto the box above (Guitar or lead is already selected).

  3. 03

Play the MIDI back against the guitar and adjust the tempo if needed.

  4. 04

Download the MIDI and put any instrument on the part.

No MIDI pickup needed

Playing guitar into MIDI live takes a hex pickup and a converter box. For writing and arranging, a recording is enough: AnyToMIDI listens to the guitar and writes the notes as MIDI, so a riff you played can become a synth line, a bass part or a string section.

What converts well

  • Single-note riffs, lead lines and solos convert best.
  • Strummed chords come out as stacked notes; expect to tidy them.
  • Bends, slides and vibrato become the nearest steady notes, so the part plays cleanly on any instrument.

Recording tips

  • Record a clean DI if you can: distortion adds harmonics that read as extra notes.
  • Mute the strings you're not playing; ringing open strings add notes.
  • For a bass guitar, choose Bass instead.
  • If the guitar is inside a full song, use Whole song: it separates the parts first.

Questions

Is it free?

Converting one instrument is free and unlimited, and runs in your browser. Downloads are free too: 3 a month with a free account. Piano and whole-song mode give you a free 30-second preview; Pro converts whole files up to 15 minutes.

Will the MIDI line up with my DAW's grid?

Yes, for music with a steady beat. AnyToMIDI detects the tempo, writes it into the file and moves the first beat onto a bar line, so the notes land on your DAW's grid at the project tempo. If it reads a slow song at double speed, use the ½× button before downloading.

Does it work with bass guitar?

Yes: choose Bass, which listens to the bass range.

Why isn't every note perfect?

No converter gets dense, many-instrument audio exactly right: chords and full mixes are genuinely hard. A clean single line converts very well. For a whole song, AnyToMIDI separates the instruments first so each one is transcribed on its own, which gives a much better starting point than converting the mix in one go.
